The Femtocell Pilot: so you can pay to fix Optus blackspots

  • Femtocell can boost coverage
  • Useful for those caught in black spots
  • Offloads traffic to local Wi-Fi network
11/04/2011

Optus has released the Femtocell Pilot to assist customers in dealing with Optus network blackspots. The catch is, customers have to pay for it.

Already generating criticism in the US, the box plugs into the back of the broadband router, allowing customers to use their regular broadband service to get coverage on their mobile phone when living in a network black spot. While the device can also be used to get 3G coverage to use internet on your mobile or tablet, most customers would be using the Wi-Fi from their home broadband service anyway.

Analysts have already condemned Optus for the move, claiming Optus will be using the money made from selling the device to upgrade their network.

The Femtocell Pilot is available at limited stores in Sydney, Brisbane, Wollongong and the Gold Coast. The cost of the modem depends on the value of the Optus plan, however it can be purchased for $60 on a cap which is at least $79 per month. Prepaid customers can purchase the Pilot for $240 upfront.

Other mobile plan providers who use the Optus network include Virgin, iPrimus, TPG and Dodo.
Call Optus on 1300 768 194 to find out if the Femtocell Pilot is suitable for you.
