Charges for sending or receiving a premium SMS can be jaw-droppingly, break the bank high. The worst part of it is you may not even know how you originally subscribed to receive the SMS’s (companies who offer these services can be sneaky in recruiting new victims).
However, consumers can rejoice because about a year ago the Australian Communication and Media Authority (ACMA) responded to the high amount of complaints regarding premium SMS services. Mobile plan customers can “opt-out” of sending or receiving premium SMS’s, which can range from 55 cents up to an outrageous $6 for ringtones or games.
To ensure your mobile has premium SMS services disabled, you can either give your mobile carrier’s friendly customer service centre a call, or log into your mobile phone account online.
TPG mobile plan customers can deactivate premium SMS by logging into their mobile account, clicking on “View mobile service account,” navigate to the control panel, and disenable premium SMS. Be aware it may take a short time to become active.
