The long awaited Apple iPad will finally be available in Australia from May 28, 2010, and Australia's telcos have already released iPad data packages to woo Australian Apple customers.
There will be three different iPad models released later this month: a 16GB iPad for $799, a 32GB iPad for $929 and a 64GB iPad for $1049. Each model requires a micro SIM to access the internet, but cannot use USB modems for wireless broadband, nor can they share an internet data package with mobile phones.
Telstra and Optus have concurrently released iPad data packages well ahead of Apple's scheduled release date. Judging from the multitude of reviews on the net, everyone agrees Optus plans are better value for money than their Telstra equivalents.
Telstra customers can purchase an iPad micro SIM for $30, which automatically gives them 1GB of data and a bonus 2GB should it be activated by the end of June. Telstra iPad data packs include 1GB for $20, 3GB for $30 and 6GB for $60.
‘Telstra's pricing for iPad 3G gives customers control and flexibility to access the Internet on-the-go while connected to the Telstra Next GTM network,’ said Ross Fielding, a Telstra Executive Director. ‘Telstra is providing Australians the ability to enjoy 3G on iPad in more places than on any other network.’
Optus is yet to release full details on the purchase cost of the iPad SIM, but their iPad data packs are already looking more competitive than Telstra's plans. Optus will be offering 2GB for $20, 3GB for $30 and 8GB for $60, but Apple fans will have to wait and see if Optus can match Telstra's bonus iPad credit upon purchasing the micro SIM.
It has been a long wait for iPad enthusiasts, and the competition between Australian telcos is about to increase as VHA are yet to release their own data packs.
